Obituary

Walter F. Markett, Jr., 90, of 11 Ruth Drive, Wilbraham, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Sunday, September 26, 2021. He was the beloved husband of over 50 years to Elaine M. Markett who passed away on October 9, 2005. He was born in Westfield, on March 16,1931 to the late Mildred Elizabeth Tudryn and Walter Frederick Majkut (Markett). He grew up in Westfield, attended Westfield High School and lived in Westfield, MA and Windsor, CT, before settling in Wilbraham in 1967. He was a graduate of Westfield High School, attended Norwich University and graduated from Western New England College with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He worked as a Department Inspector for Westinghouse Corp., Springfield, Fruhauf Trailer Co., Westfield and Architectural Draftsman for Westfield Working Co., Westfield. He worked as Assistant Town Engineer in Windsor, CT, Town Engineer in South Windsor, CT, Town Engineer in Wilbraham, MA, Resident Engineer for Anderson & Nichols in Boston, Director of Public Works in Natick, MA, Director of Public Works in Sturbridge, MA and Director of Public Works in Enfield, CT. He proudly served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Public Works Association (Director from 1965-1967), member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (Fellow Grade and Life Member), National Society of Professional Engineers, MA Highway Association, MA Water Works Association and Engineering Order of Rings Western New England College. He obtained his Professional Engineers License in MA, CT and NH, was also a Licensed Land Surveyor in MA and also became a Licensed Soil Analyst. He was the 4th Past President of the Wilbraham/Hampden Rotary Club and was awarded The Paul Harris Fellow in 1981 and 2013. He was a Rotary International District 7890 Aide, District Conference Chairman in 1978 and Rl District Secretary in 1982- 1983. He was a charter member of the Wilbraham/Hampden Rotary Club. A devout catholic, he was a faithful parishioner and Eucharistic Minister of St. Cecilia’s Church in Wilbraham. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was the 4th Grand Knight and was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, spending time with family and friends at his summer lake house in Sturbridge, MA, and being involved with projects in Rotary and Knights of Columbus. Walter enjoyed watching Mecum and Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions on television and driving his Corvette. He and his deceased wife Elaine were fortunate to travel globally to a great extent, but were always happy to return to Wilbraham. He is survived by one son, Kevin Markett of Wilbraham; 2 daughters, Kathy Watts of Dartmouth, MA and BethAnne Steil of Wilbraham; 7 grandchildren; William, Christopher, Joshua, Jonathan, Mitchell, Allie and Alissa; 3 great-grandchildren; Ella, Quinn and Elizabeth. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 30th from 4 to 7 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Funeral will be Friday, October 1st at 9 AM from the Wilbraham Funeral Home to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Cecilia’s Church. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Woodland Dell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wilbraham Rotary Memorial Foundation, 40 Post Office Park, Suite 682, Wilbraham, MA 01095 or St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus Council 10195, 42 Main St., Wilbraham, MA
