Nazih Ali Zebian passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 17, surrounded by his adoring family. He is survived by his wife Hazel of 40 years, and his children: Amanda Vasta and her husband Scott of Wilbraham; Linda Ezziddin and her husband Omar of Wilbraham; Nazih Jr. of Monson; and Joseph Zebian of Wilbraham; as well as his four grandchildren: Brayden, Sadie, Abraham and Dalia.
Born June 18, 1956 in Mdoukha, Lebanon, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1973 and settled in Springfield. He found professional success in an unlikely place for a young man who grew up working on a vineyard: furniture. He and Hazel opened Ideal Furniture in Agawam in 1985 and soon after relocated to Indian Orchard. In 1996 they opened a second location: Country Homes in Wilbraham. He learned to fix just about anything in his more than 30 years in business and became a fixture of the local community as he serviced his customers. Not a contractor by trade, he learned how to lead a construction project like a professional, and built numerous homes throughout Wilbraham. A generous man, he often gave away items from his store to customers at no charge. He never passed a person in need without giving.
He was known to be an impeccable dresser, regardless of the occasion. He gardened in oxfords and Dockers, his black hair combed back and set with pomade. There were few things he loved after his wife and children: his furniture store--a 300-year-old building he worked tirelessly to restore and maintain; his homes in Wilbraham and Portsmouth, RI; the first crop of garden tomatoes; the New York Yankees; and his pristine closet full of clothing and shoes.
