Obituary

Margaret Rose Halgas of Wilbraham passed away peacefully on May 8, 2020 at Vero Health & Rehab of Hampden. Daughter of the late Joseph E. and Frances J. (Ferrero) Gotta, she was born in Springfield, MA on June 17, 1939. Margaret was raised in Springfield and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1957 and earned an associate’s degree from Bay Path Junior College in 1959. She married Stanley Peter Halgas in 1962 and the couple moved to Wilbraham in 1968 to raise a family.

 

Margaret was Vice President of Stanley’s business, Stan-Mar Vendors for 20 years. From 1996 to 2005, she worked at Lord & Taylor in Holyoke as a sales associate, where she was well-loved by her peers and earned a Diamond Star Rating for her outstanding customer service. Margaret was a longtime parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Wilbraham and was one of the original members of the St. Cecilia’s Women’s Club.

 

Margaret will be remembered for her lively personality, kindness and generosity to others. She loved music and was an accomplished organist who played in church at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Springfield throughout her teenage years. As an adult, she dedicated her leisure time to family and extended family and creating a lovely home. She liked to garden and bake cookies and was an avid walker along with her husband. She and Stanley shared many memorable vacations to Florida, Maine, New Orleans, San Francisco and Montreal and spent time in Charlestown, RI, where they owned a second home for many years. Margaret was known for looking stylish and shared her love of fashion and shopping with her two daughters.

 

She will be sadly missed by her devoted husband Stanley of 58 years, their three children, Catherine R. Nevins and her husband Michael of New York, NY; Linda M. Monsalve of Cranston, RI; Thomas S. Halgas and his wife Kimberly of Ludlow, MA; her three grandchildren, Isaac, Julia and Greyson as well as extended family. In addition to her parents, Margaret was also predeceased by her brothers Frank, Vincent, Louis, Ernest, David and Raymond.

 

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff, nurses, aides, physical therapists and others at Vero Health & Rehab that helped keep Margaret comfortable for the last two years, including Nurses Laurie Guerin, Dan, Stephanie, Ashley, Gracie and Tracie from the East Wing, Nurses Christina, Trish, Marcia and others from the East Wing, as well as aides Sara, Jill,  Daunette, Michael, Ademere, Alita, Chelsey, Shelby, Marisila, Jackie, Alicia, Remy, Lil, Barbara and Linda.

 

Margaret's Funeral Service and burial will be private. Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Memorial donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to Saint Cecilia’s Women’s Club, 42 Main St., Wilbraham, MA 01095 or to Paralyzed Veterans of America, P.O. Box 758521, Topeka, KS 66675-8521.

Margaret's Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday July 11, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia Church, 42 Main Street, Wilbraham.
