Dr. Philip B. Stoddard passed away peacefully at home on Thursday March 10, 2022 attended by Carol and his daughter Ashley. He leaves behind a large community of patients, singers, and glider pilots whose lives he touched. Born in Batavia NY to Beverly and Clarence Stoddard, Phil attended Dartmouth College where he cultivated a lifelong love of singing as a member of the Dartmouth Glee Club and The Aires acapella group. After pursuing his MD at the University of Rochester and attaining his Board Certification in General Surgery, he served as a surgeon in the United States Air Force. He went on to complete his residency in plastic surgery at the Harvard Beth Israel Hospital in Boston before opening his private practice in Springfield, MA.
Dr. Stoddard touched countless lives over his fifty year career in the Springfield area. His proudest achievement was the Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic, directing it through many changes before finally bringing it to the Springfield Shriners Hospital for Children. Over his career, he served as President of Baystate Medical Staff and President of the Hampden District Medical Society. He was awarded the Robert M. Goldwyn Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Society of Plastic And Reconstructive Surgeons, the Senior Volunteer Physician of the Year 2007-2008 from the Hampden District Medical Society, and recognized as a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow in 2008 for his work with Rotoplast.
Phil found great joy in music and loved the opera. He was an active choral singer throughout his life, most recently singing with the Pioneer Valley Capella, the South Hadley Chorale, and the Springfield Symphony Chorus. He also sang with the Federated Community Church of Hampden choir every week. Phil’s other great love was soaring, and he could often be found in the cockpit of his glider, flying over New England.
He is survived by his daughter Ashley Stoddard of Seattle WA, Carol Stoddard of Cummington MA, and his sisters Clare Strickland and Alison Weeden. The family extends thanks to the wonderful caregivers Diane, Donna, and Peter of Baystate Hospice for their comfort and care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on April 23rd, 2022 at the Federated Community Church of Hampden. The family respectfully requests that all attendees be vaccinated for the health and wellbeing of everyone present.
