Barbara A. (Platanitis) Streisand

January 22, 1939 ~ October 6, 2021 (age 82)


Barbara A. (Platanitis) Streisand passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021 in the loving arms of her family, after a long illness.


Barbara was born in Holyoke, MA on January 22, 1939 to Peter and Lydia (Sikorski) Platanitis. She was raised in West Springfield, MA where over the years her family owned and operated multiple local restaurants including Pete's Drive In, Pete's Hickory Hearth, The Whately Diner and Larry's PX in Chatham, MA.


She attended Immaculate Conception School, Cathedral High School, and was in the West Springfield High School, class of 1956. She wed Robert R. Johnson in June, 1957, and traveled extensively as an Air Force bride until the family settled on Cape Cod.


Barbara was a graduate of Mansfield Beauty Academy in Boston and worked as a hairstylist at several salons on Cape Cod. She remarried in 1986 to second husband James D. Fraser, and moved to Agawam, MA to open her own salon ‘Barbara’s Cut Above’. She relocated to Fort Pierce, FL in 1996 and continued working as a hairstylist until she retired to Belchertown, MA in 2006. 


Barbara enjoyed family gatherings, dancing, cooking, sewing, traveling, golf, knitting, card games, and most of all, people. She loved to talk, laugh and sing loudly in her car. She was an ‘Old Timer’ Friend of Bill W, learning from and supporting countless others in the recovery community for over four decades.  She became certified in American Sign Language to assist the non-hearing in their recovery.


She was predeceased by her mother Lydia, Stepmother Helen, her father Peter and her brother Peter 'Sonny' Platanitis. She leaves her three daughters; Lynn Ann Dailing of Dennisport, MA, Dianna (Ray) Thomas of Belchertown, MA, with whom she made her home, and Roberta Riccomi of Jensen Beach, FL. She also leaves a brother James 'Jack' (Jeannette) Platanitis of Feeding Hills, MA and a sister Deborah Durkee of Chatham MA, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.


The family wishes to thank Father David Darcy, Bonnie and John from St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Belchertown, and Barbara’s star team of home caregivers - Kathy, Melissa, Jessica, Mary Beth, Overlook Hospice staff Amber, Nicole and Michelle, and Wendy at WestMass Elder Care.


Barbara will be missed by many and remembered always. In lieu of remembrance flowers or donations, please share a kind deed or word with a stranger. Services will be held at the convenience of the family and will be communicated at a later date. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
