Longtime East Longmeadow resident Archie H. Plante died peacefully on June 12, 2021 at Life Care Center of Wilbraham.  Born July 2, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he was the son of the late Rudolph and Antoinette (LaChance) Plante.  After the death of his father, Archie was brought to the U.S. by his aunt and uncle and was raised and attended school in West Springfield, MA.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp 394th Bomb Group during World War II.  After training, the group served in England, France, Holland and Germany. Archie earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory, European- African- Middle Eastern, and American Theater Campaign ribbons.  His unit received the Distinguished Unit badge and were also awarded the French Croix de Gerre .

Archie was employed by Package Machinery Company of East Longmeadow and retired in 1984 after 44 years with the company. He was a member of the East Longmeadow Fire Department, starting as a call firefighter and retired from the department as Deputy Fire Chief in 1987.  He was the first firefighter on the department to receive an Associates Degree in Fire Science.  Archie was a member of American Legion Post 293 in East Longmeadow and served several times as the Post Commander.  His biggest hobby was collecting dinosaur tracks and mineral samples from around New England and New York State and was a member of the Connecticut Valley Mineral Club.  He made jewelry with some of the mineral samples he collected.

Archie was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley in 2016 after 69 years of marriage.  He will be sadly missed by his children: sons Dennis and wife Candace of Apollo Beach, FL; Paul and wife Kimberley of Holland, MA; Donald and wife Debora of Paucatuck, CT; and daughters Denise Cote of Chicopee, MA and Lisa Plante of West Springfield, MA. Archie also leaves his grandson Daniel Plante and his family of Tarpon Springs, FL; his brother-in-law Donald Bates and wife Jean of Myrtle Beach, SC and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Shirley, Archie was predeceased by his brothers Guy, Noel, Herman, Girard and Bertrand Plante and their spouses and his sister Georgette Nadeau and her husband, all of Quebec, Canada.  Also, his brother-in-law Paul (Edna) Bates and sister-in-law Jean (Edwin) Falk as well as his daughter-in-law Barbara Plante.

Archie’s Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 2 at 10:30 AM at St. Michael's Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow, MA followed by burial in Greenlawn Cemetery in East Longmeadow.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 1 from 4-7PM at the Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Road, Wilbraham. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Archie's memory may be made to American Legion Post 293, 3 Legion Court, East Longmeadow, MA 01028 or to St Michael's Church.
