Nancy L. (O’Neil) Phelps, 83, a remarkable and beloved individual, passed away suddenly on July 15th, 2023, with her devoted husband of 60 years by her side.Born in Springfield on August 4th, 1939, Nancy was an absolutely amazing person who touched the lives of many. Her legacy as a compassionate nurse,
dedicated family member, and cherished friend will forever be remembered.
Nancy graduated from Cathedral High School in 1957. She continued her education at Mercy Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse in the class of 1960. Nancy’s nursing career began at Mercy Hospital in labor and delivery where her expertise led her to become a Nurse Manager on the Orthopedic Floor. She earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, patients, and aspiring healthcare professionals. She will always be remembered working at Mercy Hospital and later in life at Brightside, leaving a lasting impact.
Beyond nursing, Nancy had many passions. She loved shopping, collecting jewelry, and gardening. Animals held a special place in her heart, and she found joy in feeding the birds and squirrels.
Throughout her life, Nancy adored being a pet owner and loved all her companions. Cooking was another passion, and her holiday and homemade meals were always delicious and are greatly missed.She looked forward to flipping through her cooking and baking recipe books or solving solitaire and word searches.
Family trips to destinations in New England, especially Maine, created treasured memories. Beach trips brought her a sense of serenity, and she enjoyed collecting seashells with her family.
Nancy was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She listened attentively and cared for her family. Her unwavering love and incredible spirit will be forever remembered.
Nancy is survived by her husband, William D. Phelps, son Brian J. Phelps, and four cherished grandchildren: Ashley, Alissa, Benjamin, and Allison Phelps. She was predeceased by her parents,
Thomas J. and Lillian (Betters) O’Neil, and her brother, Thomas O’Neil Jr. Calling hours will be held on
Monday, July 24th, from 4-7 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 25th, at 11:00 AM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, followed by burial
in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
