Matthew Phillip Metzler

October 14, 1934 — February 22, 2024

Matthew P. Metzler, 89, died peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at Life Care Center of Wilbraham. Born in Springfield to the late Jacob and Julia (Schweitzer) Metzler, he was a graduate of Classical High School. He earned a Bachelors degree in Education from Western Connecticut University and a Masters degree in Education from Westfield State University. During his 35 year career, Matthew taught in the Springfield School system at Homer Street School, Frederick Harris School and Washington School. Matthew was a longtime member and served as organist at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Wilbraham. A proud Mason, he earned a 50 year in from the Newton Masonic Lodge in Wilbraham and enjoyed playing in the Melha Shriners Military Band and German Band. During retirement, Matthew developed a passion for bowling and belonged to the Springfield Schoolmasters Bowling League. He also enjoyed golfing weekly with friends. Matthew is survived by his four sons; Matthew W. Metzler of Springfield, Paul S. Metzler of Chicopee, James P. Metzler of Longmeadow and David P. Metzler of Chicopee, brother Norman Metzler of Eugene, OR and sister Lucille Avery of Chicopee. He was predeceased by his wife Joanne Metzler in 2017. Family and friends may meet for Matthew’s Graveside Service on Wednesday, February 28th at 11:00AM in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker St., Springfield. Wilbraham Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of one’s choice.
