Obituary
Beloved farmer and community leader Llewellyn S. Merrick, 90, died peacefully on

Friday December 6th, 2019, at Life Care Center Rehab of Wilbraham. Born in Springfield to the late Charles L. and Elizabeth (Kidder) Merrick, he spent many summers of his youth working on the Merrick farm with his father. He was graduated from Amherst College and was known as an independent thinker. As an engineer, he worked on the manuals for the first unmanned shuttle to the moon, and as a cornerstone member of the Pompton Valley Presbyterian Church (in NJ), he constructed the first electronic organ for the congregation.

Fourty-four years ago, Llewellyn moved to the Merrick homestead and started farming alongside his father. He was a steward of the soil, fiercely protective of the land for future generations. He tutored many young men and women in the art of farming as well as life as it should be. They regularly came back to tell him how much his tutelage supported them in their life's journey. In addition to farming and mentoring, he served on many boards and committees, most notably as a library trustee, and on the historic district committee. He also gave back to the community as a dedicated member of the Wilbraham United Church. He was a bass in the choir and even occasionally gave the sermon (which was appropriate because his great, great, great, great, great grandfather, Noah Merrick, was in fact the first minister of the Outward Commons, which later became Wilbraham).

Llewellyn was predeceased by his son Timothy L. Merrick in 1975. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia E. Merrick, three beloved grandchildren: Daniel, Michael and Sara and his companion of 42 years, Theresa Munn. A Memorial Service and luncheon will be held on Saturday, January 18th  at 10 AM at the Wilbraham United Church. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Llewellyn requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St., Wilbraham, MA 01095.
