Lifelong East Longmeadow resident John J. Turnberg, 89, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Mercy Medical Center. He was one of 11 children born to the late Eric and Ethel (Parks) Turnberg. John served his country proudly in the US Marine Corps from 1957 through 1959 and worked for the Local 98 International Union of Operating Engineers for 38 years until his retirement.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Elaine (Murphy) Turnberg, their two sons, John Turnberg, Jr. and his wife Karen, as well as James Turnberg, former daughter in law Michelle Laferriere, siblings: Jane Mellis, Barbara Sullivan, Noreen Bradway and her husband David, Gail Parrow, and Richard Turnberg and his wife Gayle. Five cherished grandchildren: Ian, Alexander, Claire, Lars, and Ariel as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend Elliot Phillips. In addition to his parents, John was also predeceased by his siblings Madeline Summerlin, Irene Laino, Albin Turnberg, Shirley Vidito and Lois Foisy. Family and friends may meet for John’s Funeral Mass on Monday, March 18, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Michael’s Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Wilbraham Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
