Obituary
Longtime Wilbraham resident, John Joseph Monteiro, 96, died peacefully on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer. Born in New Bedford, MA to the late John and Beatrice (Oliveira) Monteiro, he was a proud Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, where he served at Iwo Jima, involved in several fighter pilot rescue missions. After the war, John joined the Merchant Marines. In the late 1940’s, John moved to New York City, where he developed a love of Jazz music. He served as Asst. Fire Chief at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod. In the late 1950’s, he moved to Springfield, where he worked for Pratt & Whitney and for the United States Postal Service on Tapley Street. In 1960, John became the first licensed AllState Insurance Agent in the State of MA and continued his career in insurance for the rest of his life. After observing a high profile case at the Hampden County Courthouse in 1977, John became a ”court room buff.” He was a recognizable figure at the courthouse, given the title, ”Info John,” and brought civility and good cheer to people of all walks of life. He also served as a Constable for the City of Springfield. An avid cook and sports enthusiast, John was always present at his grandchildren’s high school and college wrestling matches. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joan (Powers) Monteiro, sons; Darryl Monteiro and his wife Nancy of Fall River and Karl Monteiro and his wife Olga of Wilbraham, daughters Donna Giella and her husband Joseph of Mattapoisett and Laurie Caruso of Springfield, 13 cherished grandchildren; David, Kimberly, Samuel, Robin, Gabriel, Rosemary, Erin, Maria, Anthony, Ryan, Sean, Austin and Kristina, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his infant son Dean Monteiro, former wife Madeline (Connelly) Monteiro, brother MJ Monteiro and his son in law Michael Caruso. Family and friends may visit with the family on Sunday, March 6th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. John’s Funeral Service and burial in MA Veterans’ Cemetery, Agawam will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
