Obituary
Longtime Hampden resident, James A. Whipple, 82, died peacefully on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Springfield to the late Percy and Henrietta (Britton) Whipple, he owned and operated Four Corners Arco in East Longmeadow for 30 years. Jim served as Chairman of Hampden Parks & Recreation Dept., a volunteer firefighter for the Hampden Fire Dept., a member of the Melha Shriners Mounted Patrol, a member of the Recreation Assn. of Hampden and an avid Red Sox and NASCAR fan. Jim is survived by his wife Carolyn (Green) Whipple, their two sons; James A. Whipple, Jr. and his wife Gina of Longmeadow and David S. Whipple and his wife Jean of Belchertown, four grandchildren; Jennifer House and her husband Timothy, Matthew Whipple and his wife Michelle, Daniel Whipple and his wife Melissa and Laura Anderson and her husband Timothy, as well as six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Lynn Ann Whipple in 2005. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Old Cemetery, Hampden. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or the Baystate Hospice, 50 Maple St., Springfield, MA 01102-9058.
