Gordon E. Meron

September 30, 1930 — January 26, 2017

Gordon E. Meron, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin and friend passed away on January 26, 2017. Born September 23, 1930 in West Springfield, he was the son of Hubert E. and Mildred (MacFarlane) Meron. He lived in West Springfield and graduated from West Springfield High School. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1950-1954 as a Hospital Corpsman. He worked as a carpenter for various contractors until finally becoming head carpenter for the former Bank of New England. Upon early retirement, due to ill health, he turned his trade as a carpenter into a hobby of making doll houses and reproduction miniature furniture. A longtime East Longmeadow resident, Gordon was Past Master of Mt. Orthodox Lodge of Masons of West Springfield and Past Noble Grand of Springfield Lodge #235 Independent Order of Oddfellows and Past Noble Grand of J. W. Nickles Rebekah Lodge. He was a 50 year member of the Masons, a 32nd degree Mason and a longtime member of First Congregational Church of East Longmeadow. For many years he also had a hobby of raising and showing Bantam chickens. He loved to garden, to play the harmonica, tell jokes (even from his Navy days), his poker group, watch Red Sox games and New England Patriots games. He also loved to spend time in the Vermont home that he and his father in law built together. He leaves his wife Gail (Silver) Meron of 60 years, two daughters; Susan E. Essrig of Westminster, VT and Cindy Porway and son in law Dr. Mark Porway of East Longmeadow, three grandchildren; Travis Borges of Laconia, NH, Derek Borges of Westminster, VT and Katie Stone of Baltimore, MD, step granddaughter Ashley Essrig of Laconia, NH, brother Roy E. Meron of Lowell, MA and several cousins. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00-5:00pm at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Gordon�s Funeral Service will be Monday at 11:00am at Wilbraham Funeral Home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396 or Dakin Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101-6307.
