Gerald E. Sweeney

Gerald E. Sweeney, 79, died peacefully on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born in Springfield to the late Edward A. and M. Ita (Meskill) Sweeney and was a proud Navy Veteran of the Vietnam Era. He served on the U.S.S. Cambria in the Atlantic during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Missile Blockade. He also served in the Mediterranean Sea. Jerry, a friend of Bill W., was an Employment and Career Counselor Specialist, helping many people achieve a “fresh start” in life. A lifetime member of the VFW, Jerry also belonged to the American Legion and the Chicopee Moose Lodge. He is survived by his beloved companion of many years, Susan Fielding of Springfield and his sister Judith Morrison of Wilbraham. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2nd from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Jerry’s Funeral will be Friday at 10:30AM from Wilbraham Funeral Home to a Funeral Mass at 12:00 Noon at St. Cecilia Church, 42 Main St., Wilbraham. Jerry’s Committal Service with Military Honors will take place on Monday, Feb.6th at 3:00PM at MA Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam. Memorial contributions may be made in Jerry’s name to St. Patrick Fathers Missionary Society, 8422 West Windsor Ave., Chicago, IL 60656-4252.
