Obituary
George Michael O’Hagan, 94, of Wilbraham, MA, passed-away on Sunday Sept 6, 2020 at Orchard Valley surrounded by his six loving children. He was a resident of Wilbraham for 50 years.
George was born on July 4, 1926 to John O’Hagan and Mary (Leahy) O’Hagan of Springfield MA, a first-generation Irish American and grew up during the what was considered “Greatest Generation” of the Western world. He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth O’Hagan and his two siblings Jack O’Hagan and Eleanor Heffernan.
George graduated from Cathedral High School, Class of 41, where he met the love of his life Elizabeth Fahy. After graduation, George enlisted in the Navy and served as a yeoman working in telecommunications and while serving also enjoyed competitive boxing. After serving in the Navy he returned to Springfield and started his long and successful career with New England Telephone and ATT. He was a communicant and greeter at St. Cecilia’s Church, took pride in his home and was a jack of all trades.
George married Elizabeth on Sept 6, 1947 and rejoined her on what would have been their 73rd wedding anniversary. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
George is survived by his six children MaryAnn O’Hagan and her husband Carl Gahm, Martha Tata and late husband Don Tata, Michael O’Hagan and his husband Mark Gallant, Catherine O’Hagan, Robert O’Hagan and Maggie and Stephen Brochu. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Orchard Valley, Encompass Rehabilitation, Kathleen Sullivan and her staff of Home Care for Independent Living and Maria Lankowski (NP). They treated him with respect, love, and dignity. A special thanks to Liz Daley at Orchard Valley who connected with George in a remarkable and impactful way.
Family and friends may meet for George’s Funeral Mass on Thursday at 12:00 Noon at St Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main St. Wilbraham. Guests are welcome to attend the Mass if they wish, services will be following state protocols for COVID-19. Family members understand personal choices regarding attending gatherings due to COVID-19. A private burial will take place immediately after the mass. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, 34 Washington St, #310 Wellesley Hills, MA 02481. www.curealz.org
