Frank Sweryda, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, with his family by his side, at the Veterans’ Home in Holyoke. Frank was born in the small coal mining town of Moosic, PA, to the late Rose and Theodore Sweryda, who had emigrated from Ukraine.
Frank graduated from Moosic High School at 17 and immediately enlisted in the US Air Force. He spent over 11 years on active duty as an airborne radio operator, intending to make it his career. He loved flying as well as seeing much of the world. The Air Force stopped using radio operators, so he decided to leave, rather than to be grounded. He then went to work for AT & T as a craftsman, promoted to supervisor, and worked there for the next 29 years, until his retirement. He joined the Air Force reserve at Westover and served for the next 18 years.
Frank was a lifelong birdwatcher, starting when he was a Boy Scout, and enjoyed many birdwatching trips with his friend Dave. A lover of classical music, Frank enjoyed listening to Beethoven and Mozart.
In addition to his parents, Frank was predeceased by his three older brothers; John, George and Joseph Sweryda and his four year old son Scott Sweryda in 1967.
Frank will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Diane (Bartels) Sweryda, three children; Susan Rezuke, Frank Sweryda and Eric Sweryda. He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren; Todd Sweryda, Sarah White, Arielle Bures, Dan Pelissier, Zack Pelissier, Scott Sweryda, Charles Sweryda and Jesse Sweryda, four cherished great grandchildren and his favorite niece Susan Foss and her husband Rod.
Frank’s family would like to give special thanks to Olga and Debbie at the Veterans’ Home in Holyoke for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 26th from 10 – 11AM, concluding with a Prayer Service at 11AM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans’ Home in Holyoke, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040 or to The Jimmy Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
