Obituary
Ely J. Christenson, 80, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at home, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Springfield, he was a longtime East Longmeadow resident and worked as Foreman for the East Longmeadow Dept. of Public Works for 40 years, retiring in 2003. Ely was a very special man; a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put others before himself. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make everyone laugh. He enjoyed motorcycle hill climbing, racing, hunting, fishing and golfing. Most of all, Ely cherished his time with his wife, sons and grandchildren. Ely is survived by his beloved wife Rena (Vautrain) Christenson of East Longmeadow, son Scott Benson and his wife Tammi of Feeding Hills, son Ron Christenson and his fiancé Justina of Springfield, son Jason Christenson of Agawam, son Richard Barrows and his wife Malina of East Longmeadow and son Jeffrey Barrows and his wife Michele of Springfield. “Poppy” will be sadly missed by his 6 grandchildren; Brian, Tyler, Haley, Olivia, Little Ely and Jakub. In addition to his parents, Ely was also predeceased by his sister Helen Balsewicz. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 22 from 4-7PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Family and friends may meet for Ely’s Funeral Service on Tuesday, August 23 at 10AM at Wilbraham Funeral Home followed by burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sister Caritas Cancer Center, 271 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
