Elizabeth (Dougherty) Mesick, longtime Springfield resident, died Feb 12�at Soldiers� Home in Holyoke. Betty was born July 23, 1922 to the late William and Anna (Rose) Dougherty. Graduating from Providence Hospital in Holyoke in 1943 with a nursing degree, she served in the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II. After the war, she ran a health clinic for children at the House of the Good Shepherd and later served as director of the Carlson Detoxification Center at Springfield Municipal Hospital.�Committed to social justice, Betty spent a summer�building houses for Habitat for Humanity in Georgia. Betty was predeceased by her husband Eugene �Mickey� Mesick; her brothers Joseph and Paul Dougherty; and her sister Marie Corea. She leaves her friend and companion of more than 35 years, Joel Cox of Agawam; her brother William of Taunton; and numerous nieces and nephews to whom she was always very good. Funeral Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
