Dorothy J. Pelto died on Wednesday, September 10th at the generous age of 92. She passed peacefully with her two daughters by her side, listening to her favorite tune, September Song. Dorothy was born in Round Mountain, CA on October 28, 1921 to George and Jane (Burk) McAmis. In 1939 she graduated Valedictorian from her high school. After travelling for 20 years as an Air Force officers wife and raising a family, she moved to Springfield in 1971, always wanting to settle in New England because she loved the seasons. Dorothy worked as a Library Assistant for twenty years at the Sixteen Acres branch of the City Library, retiring in 1993. She loved her job as she was an avid reader and enjoyed making book recommendations to the many patrons. Dorothy was a strong, independent woman who never failed to speak her mind. She had a wonderful sense of productivity and drive, always working to improve and beautify her home and gardens, getting the most out of every day. Dorothy loved her grandchildren and enjoyed card games, arts and crafts projects, sewing Halloween costumes and baking homemade cookies with them. To her dying day, Dorothy took a special delight in beautiful flowers. She leaves the following family who loved her dearly: her two daughters Judith Szczygiel and Karla Shea, their husbands respectively, Chris and Jim, her grandchildren Jesse Gregg and wife Natalie, Natalee and Nick Shea, and her great grandson John Michael Gregg. At Dorothys request, services are private. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Springfield Library, 220 State St., Springfield, MA 01103.
