Obituary

Longtime East Longmeadow resident David N. Smith, 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Born in Holyoke to the late Omar and Mae (Bartlett) Smith, he was a proud Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Springfield College and continued his post graduate studies there, as well. David taught Physical Education for thirty one years at Agawam Junior High School, and also started the swim program for Agawam. He coached soccer in East Longmeadow for many years as well. David was a faithful communicant of St. Michael’s Church in East Longmeadow. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Judith (Oberlander) Smith, two sons: Kevin Smith and his wife Heather of East Longmeadow and Kenneth Smith of Taiwan, three daughters: Karen Smith of Great Barrington, MA, Kristina Stone and her husband Gary of East Longmeadow and Kathleen Ribeiro and her husband Norberto of Curacao, 20 grandchildren and two great granddaughters. He will be greatly missed by his many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friend John Hayden. David was predeceased by his brother Abraham Smith. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 12th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Family and friends may meet for David’s Funeral Mass on Wednesday at 10:00 AM at St. Michael’s Church followed by burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Michael’s Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow, MA 01028 or Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
