Obituary
Catherine M. (Gallagher) Maleckas, 71, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2019, at Day Brook Village Nursing Center (formerly Loomis House) in Holyoke, after a valiant battle against liver disease.
Catherine was born on February 25, 1948, in Ventry, Co. Kerry, Ireland. She moved to the United States when she was 18 years old. Here she married, raised her family, and worked as a school secretary in the Hampden Wilbraham Regional Schools, retiring from Minnechaug.
Catherine loved music, chocolate, square dancing, knitting, painting, calligraphy, playing cards, traveling, and her Irish heritage. She was a member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club in Springfield. Catherine will be remembered most for her kindness and the care she gave others.
Catherine was predeceased by her brother, Michael J. Gallagher (Mary) of Chicopee and her sister, Eileen T. Goodrow (Steven) of Belchertown. She is survived by her mother Rita (Martin) Gallagher of Belchertown; her husband of 48 years, Gerald “Jerry” Maleckas; two daughters, Judy Maleckas Farrar of Southampton and Sheila Maleckas of Wilbraham; sisters and best friends Rita Gallagher Smith (Gerald) of Huntington and Marie Bronder (Robert) of Waunakee, Wisconsin; and a large extended family. Catherine’s four grandchildren, Daniel, Harrison, James and Keira Farrar of Southampton, will especially miss their “Nana,” along with their dad, Michael Farrar of Huntington.
Calling hours for Catherine will be Monday, July 15th from 4:00PM-7:00PM at WILBRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, 2551 Boston Road, Wilbraham. The funeral will take place Tuesday at 9:00AM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, followed by Mass at 10:00AM at St. Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main Street, Wilbraham. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Catherine’s memory to Make-A-Wish America, Gift Processing, 1702 East Highland Ave., Suite 400, Phoenix, AZ 85016.
