Benedetto M. DeCosmo, 92, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2022 after a brief illness.
Born on February 7, 1930 in Springfield, MA, he was the 4th child of Giuseppe & Angelina (Fico) DeCosmo.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Gertrude E. (Mullen) DeCosmo, three children, Donna (John) Geiss of Southwick, MA, Linda (Phil) Jensen of Agawam, MA and Joseph DeCosmo of Westfield, MA and three step-daughters, Anne-Marie Villamaino of Hampden, MA, Susan (John) White of Stafford, CT and Nancy (Peter) Cokotis of East Longmeadow, MA, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and treasured friends. Ben’s first wife Joan M. (Hachey) DeCosmo died on Nov. 16th, 1979 after 29 years of marriage.
Ben was predeceased by his two brothers, Carmelo and Vito and his two sisters Rose Pelletier and Marie Register, a grandson Joseph DeCosmo, step-son William Borden and son-in-law Vincent Villamaino.
Ben was a 1947 graduate of Springfield Technical High School. He was a proud football player for Jr. City Football of Springfield, MA and as QB was undefeated in 1946 & ‘47. In 1948 and ’49 he played Semi-Pro as QB. He served in the Army during the Korean War (1951- 1953) as Army Military Police of the 175th MP Battalion. He worked 31 years for the USPS and retired as Manager, General Mail Facility.
He was a longtime member of the Chicopee Elks, Hampden Lions and the American Legion in Florida. Ben was an avid gardener who enjoyed delivering fresh vegetables to many neighbors, family and friends. He enjoyed visiting National Parks wherever he traveled and loved reading maps, war and history books, looking up trivia and sharing his wealth of knowledge with others. Ben will always be remembered for his deep devotion to his faith, charity to many organizations, an enormous love of making pasta, soups and chili, and joyfully gathering family and friends around the table.
Ben’s Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 28th in Boca Raton, FL. His Committal Service with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, November 30th at 11:00AM at MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104.
