Barbara E. (Niemand) Urlage

Obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Barbara Ellen (Niemand) Urlage on Thursday, September 15, 2022. She died peacefully surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Newport, KY, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick J. and Helen A. (Powers) Niemand. She attended Notre Dame Academy in Covington, KY and then went on to attend college at Villa Madonna College (now Thomas More University) majoring in English. After graduation, Barbara enjoyed working as an editorial assistant at Southwestern Publishing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Soon after, Barbara met her loving husband “Jerry” of 58 years and began starting a family, where they ultimately settled in Wilbraham, MA. She was a devoted mother of 4 children, very involved in teaching religious education, a Brownie leader, and active in the PTO. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, puzzles, and music. Barbara was “quite the perfectionist” and had an unbelievable work ethic that was passed on to her children and grandchildren. She also worked in administration for the VNA of Pioneer Valley and was a faithful communicant of St. Cecilia Church, where she was also a member of their Spiritual Group.
She is survived by her husband Gerald Stanley Urlage, their four devoted children; son Mark Urlage and his wife Karen and their children; Courtney and her fiancé Michael Jentzen, Amanda and Jessica, daughter Jane Harris and her late husband Richard Harris, Jr., and their children; Taylor and his fiancé Jessica Priesing, Emily, Meghan and Alyssa, daughter Jennifer Spagnolo and her children; Sarah and Nicholas, and son Daniel Urlage and close family friend Darren Sweeney. Barbara is also survived by her sister Mary “Mimi” Galvin and her husband Donald, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 22nd from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham, MA. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, September 23rd at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia Church, 42 Main St., Wilbraham, MA. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Cecilia Church, 42 Main St., Wilbraham, MA.
