Leonard A. Mengel, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the
Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Leonard was bom in Holyoke, MA son of the late Alfred and Flora (Marcotte) Mengel.
Leonard served his country in the Air Force from April 1951 until his honorable discharge in April 1955.
Leonard owned and operated Suzor’s Appraisal Service for many years prior to his retirement.
He lived in Wilbraham, MA most of his life before going to the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Leonard’s wife, Wanda F. (Ruszczyk) Mengel of 51 years predeceased him on October 14,2006. He is survived by their precious “Babydoll,” Lori Tetrault and her husband Tim Tetrault of Wilbraham, MA along with “lil” boy, Butterscotch. Leonard was predeceased by his brother, Edward Mengel and his sister, Bertha “Tots” Maloney. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and their extended families.
Leonard’s family would like to extend a special and sincere “Thank you” to all who provided loving care at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, especially the dedicated and awesome staff on 1 North and Beacon Hospice.
Lenny was very sociable, humorous, friendly, outgoing and witty. He loved to crack jokes and make people laugh. Lenny was often described a charmer and someone who could always put a smile on your face. He will be greatly missed at the Soldiers’ Home, having been a resident there for almost 6 years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16th from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham followed by a Funeral Home Service at 11:30 AM. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1:00 PM at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
