Joseph P. Dempsey, 85, died peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Holyoke Soldiers Home. Born in Buffalo, NY to the late John and Margaret (Colton) Dempsey, he was a proud Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a controller at Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. for 40 years, until his retirement. A communicant of St. Cecilia’s Church, Joe was an avid sports fan, especially golf and hockey and loved doing yard work and traveling. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 43 years, Roma T. (Gawrilow) Dempsey in 1998. He is survived by his six children: Joseph Dempsey and his wife Susan of Granville, MA, Michael C. Dempsey of Chicago, IL, Brian T. Dempsey and his wife Janice of Seaside, CA, John Dempsey and his wife Debbie of Salisbury, NC, Elizabeth Dempsey of Springfield and Maureen Dempsey and her husband Kiffin Steurer of New York City, brothers: John “Jack” Dempsey of Minnesota and Daniel Dempsey ad his wife Joan of Orchard Park, NY, sister Margaret Hardy of Amherst, NY, grandchildren: Lucas Dempsey, Rebecca Pagliuca, Wesley Steurer, Dawn Pierce and her husband Steven, Rachel Dempsey and Clemens Steurer and great grandchildren: Colton, Ryder and Kylie. In addition to his wife, Joe was also predeceased by his sister Mary Dempsey. Family and friends may meet for Joe’s Funeral Mass on Friday at 12:30 PM at St. Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main St., Wilbraham. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Springfield. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
