John F. Fitzgerald, 91, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at Baystate Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield on June 2nd, 1928, he was the son of the late William and Lucienne (Chevalier) Fitzgerald. He grew up in Springfield and was a 1946 graduate of Cathedral High School where he played football and basketball. Jack was a WW II, U.S. Navy Veteran; he enlisted directly out of high school and was discharged in 1948. In his youth, Jack attended the Springfield Boys Club daily, worked as a counselor at their camp in Brimfield, and later was on their Board and served as President. After the Service, he graduated from Notre Dame University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, earned a Master’s Degree from New York University in 1954 and went on to become a MA State Trooper until 1956. He was employed by the United Prison Assn. in Boston while attending New England School of Law and Boston College School of Law receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1961. In 1972 he joined the Law Office of Matroni, Dimauro, Sweeney and Fitzgerald. In 1990, he opened his own office with his daughter Kathleen Fitzgerald. He was an active communicant of St. Cecilia’s Church and was a member, officer, and President of their former Men’s Club. He was Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee and was elected Selectman for the Town of Wilbraham. In 2005 he was honored for his “Dedication and commitment in providing legal volunteer services to low income people.” He is survived by his wife of 65 years Barbara A. (Loncrini) Fitzgerald, three daughters: Patricia Tabb, Kathleen Fitzgerald and Sharon El-Dada and son in law Sam El-Dada, four grandchildren: Jamie, Laura, Jonathan, and Eric, five great grandchildren: Elizabeth, Catherine, John, Joey and Hannah as well as many good friends and relatives. He was a very special man and loved by all. The Funeral will be Saturday, August 24th at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main St., Wilbraham. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. In lieu of flowers, contributions in “Jack’s” memory may be made to the Springfield Boys and Girls Club, 481 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104, Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to St. Cecilia’s Church Music Fund, 42 Main St., Wilbraham, MA 01095.
