Gerald J. Balboni, 90, died peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Loomis Lakeside at Reed’s Landing, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield to the late James and Adele (Montanari) Balboni, he was educated in Springfield schools and moved to Wilbraham in 1966, where he resided for 47 years.
He was in the coin operated machine business for over 58 years. He started working with his father in Capitol Music Inc. and later became owner. In 1970 he joined into partnership with Becker Amusement Co. Inc. and worked there until his retirement in 1991. From 1949 to 1964 he was associated in the family business, Balboni Gardens on Boston Rd. in Springfield (present location of Walmart). He was a proud Navy veteran of World War II and served in Okinawa. He was discharged as a Carpenter's Mate, 3rd class, having served in the 149th, 14th, and 58th battalions. He was awarded the American Area Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal. A communicant of St. Cecilia’s Church, he was a member of the Italian-American Club of Springfield, VFW Post 277 of Indian Orchard and Hampden Vets Post 9397 and in recent years enjoyed volunteering at Shriners Hospital in Springfield.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Gilda M. (Toro) Balboni and cherished daughters, Virginia Balboni-Hinkley of Springfield, Laurie White and her husband William of Perry, NY and Barrie Tunstall and her husband Mike of Finchville, KY and will be dearly missed by them. He also leaves his twin sister Geraldine Melnyk of Westfield, 7 loving and adored grandchildren and 1 cherished great granddaughter.

Gerald’s Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 22nd at 11:00 am at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Visitation will precede the Service from 10 – 11am at the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908 or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
