Eugene H. Bugbee, 92, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Chicopee, he was a longtime resident of Wilbraham, where he raised his family. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley (Granfield) Bugbee and sister Marge Flint. He leaves six children, which he raised alone following Shirley’s untimely death: Colleen Bugbee, Jean Bugbee, Mary Bugbee and her husband David Cutler, John Bugbee and his wife Michelle, James Bugbee and Martha Bugbee and her husband Andrew Weitzman. Gene also leaves 18 grandchildren: Michael and Stephen Ferrigno, Daniel, Arthur and Emma Hockmuth, Jason, Lauren and Nathan Cutler, Madison, Kylie and Ian Bugbee, Ryan, Devin, Kyle and Cameron Bugbee, Samuel, Wesley and Shayla Weitzman and two great grandchildren: Hunter and Jacob. Gene is survived by Connie, his beloved wife of 27 years and her children: Michelle, Stephen and Keith. He also leaves his sister Florence Langway, many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Beau.
Gene was a World War II Army veteran and a graduate of the University of Massachusetts. He had a long career in the insurance industry starting at the Springfield Fire and Marine, which became Monarch Life Insurance Co., before he joined the family insurance agency, now Granfield, Bugbee and Masse, where he was President and Principal for over 30 years. He was active in many community service organizations as well as a longtime trustee of the Chicopee Savings Bank. Gene was known for his charming personality, quick wit and devotion to his wife and children.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Gene’s Funeral will be Friday, April 26th at 10:00 AM from Wilbraham Funeral Home to a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main St., Wilbraham. Burial will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or Dakin Humane Society, 171 Union St., Springfield, MA 01105, in memory of his beloved Molly.
