Longtime Wilbraham resident, Charles F. Laberge, III, 95, died peacefully on Friday, November 8, 2019. Born in Brattleboro, VT, he was the son of the late Charles and Beatrice (Tacy) Laberge of Hinsdale, NH.
He joined the Boy Scouts of America in 1937, and in the early years of WWII, he served with the Scouts and local firemen as a plane spotter in Hinsdale NH. He was a charter representative and Commissioner of the Boy Scouts, a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting and was a recipient of the Boy Scout’s St. George Award, Silver Beaver, Wood Badge, the 1981 District Award of Merit, the 1988 Distinguished Commissioner Award and the 1990 Presidents Award, in addition to serving on many National BSA Jamboree staff.
Enlisting in the Army at 18, he spent 3 years in Germany, participating in the Battle of the Bulge; earning the European Campaign Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return he worked for many years at Westinghouse and later as a Lithographer for Diamond International Co.
He was a graduate of Western New England University. A faithful communicant of St. Cecilia Church, he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Funeral Server and was a CCD teacher for 25 years. He was named Grand Marshall of the 2009 Wilbraham Peach Festival parade in recognition of his volunteer community service.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years Babbette (Fagnan) Laberge, his daughter Paula L. Chevrier and her husband Mark of Wilbraham and 4 cherished grandchildren- David Chevrier, Lisa Rowan, Maslin Laberge and Marly Laberge and 6 adored great grandchildren- Lenora, James, Owen, Brianne, Lillian and Vera. Charles was predeceased by his son, Thomas F. Laberge in 2017, and his granddaughter Mia Laberge in 2019. A Funeral Mass for Charles will be held on Monday, November 18th at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia Church. The Family will greet visitors at the church from 10:15 to 10:45 AM, prior to the Mass. Burial will be held at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hinsdale, NH. Wilbraham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
