Charles Ira FishkinFebruary 1, 1920 ~ January 5, 2018 (age 97)
Charles I. Fishkin, 97, died peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Baystate Wing Hospital. Born in New York City to the late Joseph and Charlotte (Schroeder) Fishkin, he attended Dickinson High School in Jersey City, NJ and graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1941 with a Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served as Asst. Engineering Officer on the USS Roe and spent a year on convoy duty in the Atlantic and the Caribbean, and as an Engineering Officer serving 1 1/2 years in the South Pacific, during World War II. He finished his US Navy career with many commendations and other accolades. He worked in various engineering and management positions in Buffalo, NY, before he and his wife Carol moved to New England. They built their house in East Longmeadow in 1950, where he lived with his daughter Susan and grandson Christopher until his passing. He retired from River Graphics of South Hadley and continued to work as a consulting engineer until age 75. He was a founding member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in East Longmeadow and remained active in the choir for over 50 years. He loved music, playing and teaching guitar, singing in the Springfield Symphony and was an accomplished woodworker and guitar maker. He enjoyed sailing and spending time on Cape Cod and the Connecticut Shore with his family. Most recently he played guitar and sang at local nursing homes with fellow St. Mark’s parishioners. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years Carol (Siedle) Fishkin, his daughter Carol Ann Murphy and brother Henry Fishkin. He leaves his daughter Susan Fishkin O’Brien and her partner Danny Messier, grandchildren Aaron O’Brien and partner Kelly Maurer, Christopher O’Brien, Katrina Murphy Castro and husband Tony Castro and their son Antonio Castro and Ryan Murphy and partner Barry, as well as nephews Edward Seidle and wife Tamara and Robert Siedle Kahn and families, his cherished dog Bubbles and many other beloved family and friends. The Fishkin family is grateful to the VA and the staff at Capuano Care for their kindness to Charles and to the many family and friends for their thoughtful calls and visits. Charles’ Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 6:00pm at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, One Porter Rd., East Longmeadow, MA 01028.
