Vivian (Grant) George, 94, died peacefully on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Loomis Lakeside Senior Living. Born in Chicopee to the late Clifford and Clemence (Gill) Grant, she lived in Palmer for many years before moving to Springfield in 1979. She was a graduate of South Hadley High School and Mount Holyoke College, received her Master’s Degree in Education from American International College and pursued Advanced Graduate Studies at Springfield College. She taught elementary school for several years at both White Street School and Mary Walsh School and left the classroom to take the position of Social Studies Resource Teacher for the City of Springfield. In 1978 she became supervisor for the state funded integration program which aimed to improve the racial balance of all Springfield schools.
Vivian was a longtime member of Foster Memorial Church and served as president of the Fosterian women’s groups and chairperson of several church boards. After her retirement, she spent her time volunteering for the area Girl Scouts and in activities to raise funds for both Foster Church and the Girl Scouts. She especially enjoyed gardening, reading, stitchery and traveling.
She will be sadly missed by her two daughters; Christina Bousquet and Samantha D. George, her brother Peter Grant, her sister Elizabeth Shrader and her four grandchildren; Matthew Bousquet and his wife Liza, Renee Bousquet, Kate Granger and her husband Michael and Michael Cowie and his wife Nicole Poland.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23rd at 11:00 am at Foster Memorial Church, 1791 Wilbraham Rd., Springfield. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Vivian’s name may be made to Foster Memorial Church, 1791 Wilbraham Rd., Springfield, MA 01119 or to the American Cancer Society, 59 Bobala Rd., Holyoke, MA 01040.
