Raymond P. DesautelsFebruary 12, 1928 ~ October 23, 2017 (age 89)
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Raymond Paul Desautels, 89, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, October 23, 2017, at Life Care Center at Wilbraham. Born in Springfield to the late Paul H. and Odena (Flebotte) Desautels, he was a proud Navy Veteran, assigned to the USS Walke. A graduate of Technical High School, Class of 1946, he was owner and operator of Raymond Desautels Excavating & Grading Co., providing expert service throughout Western MA and New England. He was a brilliant creator, passionate about the crafts he loved most- woodworking, metalcraft, building and fixing – from engines to diving boards, from fireplaces to tables – no challenge was too big or small. He repaired his own bulldozers and equipment, including fabricating his own parts in his basement shop. Raymond was fascinated by steam engines. One of his greatest prides was a miniature steam engine, where he designed, cast, fabricated, and machined every part. Raymond took pride in growing his own garden and raising farm animals. One of his newer hobbies was sugaring – the family enjoyed maple syrup for many years. Raymond loved the outdoors, spending summers boating and fishing with family and friends. He was a longtime communicant of St. Aloysius/St. Jude Churches and current member of St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Ludlow. He belonged to the Sons of Italy, the Westerly Yacht Club and the USS Walke Reunion Group. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Eleanor (Mastrangelo) Desautels, three loving children; Mark Desautels and his wife Diane of Agawam, Dena Brayson and her husband Jerry of Ware and Christine Adams and her husband Geoffrey of Longmeadow, three cherished grandchildren; Samantha Desautels and Hannah and Nathan Adams, brother Paul Desautels of Springfield, sister Janet Surniak of Westfield and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Lillian Corriveau and his brother Robert Desautels. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 29th from 1-4pm at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Rd., Wilbraham. Family and friends may meet for Raymond’s Funeral Mass on Monday at 9am at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 191 Hubbard St., Ludlow. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 11am in MA Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Life Care Center at Wilbraham, Resident Activity Fund, 2399 Boston Rd., Wilbraham, MA 01095. The family would like to acknowledge the dedication, care and compassion of the Life Care staff and nurses, shown to Raymond during his final days, a debt we could never repay.
