Welcome to the memorial page for

Mary (Baltaian) Garibian

April 4, 1931 ~ July 30, 2017 (age 86)

Mary Garibian, registered nurse, beloved wife of Sarkis K. Garibian, and mother of four children, passed away on Sunday, July 30.  She was 86.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Mary was the daughter of Daniel Baltaian and Arevalous Berberian, survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. At age 16, Mary traveled to Baghdad, Iraq to study nursing at the Dar Es Salaam Hospital. After earning her degree as a registered nurse, she worked at Dar Es Salaam from 1951 to 1954—during which time she met her future husband, Sarkis. In 1955, Mary returned to Beirut to work at the American University of Beirut, until she immigrated to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1957, where she became recertified as a US registered nurse. Ultimately, Mary practiced nursing for 34 years, rounding out her career as a private duty nurse in the greater Springfield area, and member of the Springfield Professional Nurses Association. Mary was also an active member of Saint Gregory’s Armenian Church in Indian Orchard, and longtime member of the Armenian Relief Society.

Mary leaves behind Sarkis, her husband of 59 years, and her children, Edward Garibian and his wife Tanya of Longmeadow, MA; Rosemarie Halajian and her husband Krikor of San Anselmo, CA; Lenna Garibian and her husband Aram Kaligian of Belmont, MA; and Hasmig Samurkashian and her husband Zareh of Redwood City, CA.  Mary also leaves her siblings Jeannette Grubbs of Hackensack, NJ, John Balta of Montreal, Canada, and Jack and Habib Balta, of Beirut, Lebanon. Mary was a devoted grandmother to Eddie, Anna, and Nairi Garibian, Sarkis and Sona Halajian, Gayane and Arevig Kaligian, and Armen and Raffi Samurkashian; she also leaves many cherished nieces and nephews.

Mary’s funeral will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Saint Gregory’s Armenian Apostolic Church, 135 Goodwin Street, Indian Orchard, MA, 01151. Visitation for Mary will be held from 10 to 11 am, followed by funeral services at 11 am. Graveside services will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA.
